John Doyle Lee's autobiography and story of Brigham Young and the earliest days of Mormonism, which was writen after Lee's conviction for the 1857 attack on an Arkansas immigrant wagon train camped at Mountain Meadows, Utah. Lee was the only member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to be sentenced for participation in the killing of more than 120 men, women, and children bound for California.

Purpose of this preliminary study is to outline what we know about Samuel Knight's activities during the time of the Utah War, commencing in the summer of 1857 and concluding in the summer of 1858.--[p. 1]

Facsimile of George Laub's 1858-1870 diary, kept while he was living in Salt Lake City, Utah. Laub's entries focus on his family life and daily activities, including cutting hay and wheat, milling, and working at a nail factory. He also writes frequently of significant political and church events, such as the establishment of the Bank of Deseret; negotiations between representatives of James Buchanan and Brigham Young during the Utah War (1857-1858); Laub's brief stay at Camp Floyd (Fort Crittenden); his attendance of a grand jury called in Provo by Judge John Cradlebaugh in 1859 regarding the Mountain Meadows Massacre; the outbreak of the Civil War ("there are great events transpiring in the United States...the North and the South are contending against each other with words of threat in order to dissolve the union..."); the 1862 attempt to establish a constitution for the State of Deseret; and the assassination of Abraham Lincoln ("the scheme was devised by the South to have Abraham Lincoln the President of the North slain by shooting him in the theatre through his head"). Laub also writes extensively of the prophecies of Joseph Smith and on Tabernacle discourses delivered by prominent Mormons including Brigham Young, George A. Smith, Heber Kimball, Orson Pratt, and Orson Hyde.
